A Wrong Step in the Right Direction
- We’ve been creating a project concerning human rights issues for the last two weeks. The issue that we’ve chosen is landmines in Cambodia. We’ve provided some background information on the subject as well as solutions that will be put into action to help this issue. Along with this project we have created a video showing how real this issue of landmines in Cambodia is, you should watch it. Become more aware.
The main reason why so many landmines are in Cambodia is because of the Khmer Rouge, a military regime that took over the government, led by a man called Pol Pot. The Vietnam War was one of the reasons why the Khmer Rouge was formed, they wanted all of the Vietnamese out of Cambodia and Pol Pot wanted control of it. More and more people began to join the Khmer Rouge because they saw no other way out of all this death and destruction and “…by late 1972 the Khmer Rouge army had grown to some 50,000 soldiers.” (Sharp) Due to the Vietnam War and fighting between rebel groups Cambodia became sown with landmines. The blame could even possible go even farther because the Chinese, the Soviets, the Americans, and many other nations continued to supply the Khmer Rouge with landmines and other war supply’s to make a profit.
We are spreading 8 different sorts of posters around the school after human rights week so that the student body will not forget these issues. We're going to purposefully post these posters up after Human Rights week because it will be more vivid in their minds. Also if we posted it during Human Rights week there would be a bunch of other facts about other issues floating around and it would soon become blurred to the students.
